What I've realized about children's birthday parties, is that parents walk a fine line between what their child loves, and what their own personal style is. You want the party to be all about them, but you also don't want your home to become a mess of Disney characters and primary colors and decor from Party City. A big part of the reason I design children's party invitations and decor is that I know that feeling, and believe that there is a way to blend your child's favorite theme with your personal design aesthetic.
So when my sister-in-law told me that my nephew's first birthday party would be all about his favorite book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I knew it was possible to design a sophisticated - but fun - party based on this childhood favorite!
The first part of the design was coming up with my own artwork for the caterpillar. If you've ever browsed Etsy for more than 10 minutes, you'll know that almost 100% of the designs for children's parties involves stolen artwork. I decided to recreate the famous caterpillar with my own spin on the design, using slightly muted colors and a really simple layout. The rest of the invitation was kept clean and minimal, with a fun border to keep the design playful. The rest of the decor was an extension of the original design, and my sister-in-law executed it all on her own. The weeks leading up to the party, she spent some late nights printing, and cutting and assembling, but in the end, Brendan had the cutest part imaginable! Her creativity with the food, and how she tied the theme through every element at the party was incredible, and my photos don't do it justice.
