Welcome to the second post in The Photo Project series! If you just asked yourself "what's the photo project?", click back to this post to catch up!
I'm so excited to introduce you to Caitlin Fore of Sophisticaited today! I've been following Caitlin's business for quote sometime, and have to admit I have more than one of her packages on my Christmas Wish-List. She has an incredible design aesthetic, practical advice, and her business is founded in helping people feel good about themselves. Sign me up!
As a stylist it is my job to show my clients how to shop for themselves and bring out their own personal style. We all have it, I just get to show it off! So, I especially love getting to pick out outfits for the whole family! It’s so exciting to meet the family member and chat with them about their style and favorite colors and what they would like the photos to capture. It’s all very thrilling!
1 | CREATE A PINTEREST BOARD
I first like to create a Pinterest board to collect and add all clickable links of clothing that my clients will like and can afford. I try and find pieces that are available in store as it is way more convenient to go pick them up, verses order online. Creating this Pinterest board gives me a place where I can collect all the pieces I know they will love, I highly recommend everyone do this. It will make the whole process more you! After I have searched and pinned the best pieces on the Pinterest board, I create the families looks in Polyvore, it’s a great way to see how the outfits will look together. I then will send over the Polyvore board to them to get their initial thoughts and feed back to see if we need to tweak anything. If we do, I will update it and send it back quickly. And then I will go grab those pieces and bring them to the family shoot and assist to make sure everything looks great!
2 | PICK YOUR BASE COLORS
The best way to pick the right outfits is to pick at least one color to create the looks around. I used blue and purple for these examples. I then created the looks around what Mom was wearing. It is always a good idea to pick patterns that are in similar color families, as they will look great together. Just be sure the pattern isn’t too busy, as it will be very distracting in your pictures. A small plaid print for a shirt for the mister is great! Especially with dark jeans. As for the kids I like to grab a lighter color option for the girls, and a darker option for the boys. But just keep in mind their personalities and style. That’s the best part!
3 | STAY AWAY FROM MATCHING
The outfits I would stay away from are having the whole family wear all white or black tee shirts. Okay, actually, I just wouldn’t put you all in the same anything. It just looks a little weird, and you don’t wear the exact same thing everyday. So, why in your family photos. It’s a time to make memories count and create images you want to look at forever!
My favorite places to shop for the whole family are department stores. My favorite department stores are Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Dillard’s. I also love shopping at Old Navy, Gap, and J.Crew Factory when I am on a budget. Heck, event Target too! They have great stuff all the time!
I love getting to help families create the best family photos by capturing who they really are! Check out how I can do that over on Sophisticaited.com!
